Rather than developing a portfolio for academic honours, mentors like John Salmon at CDP, Judy Smith at DDB, Annabel Jenkins at Cucumber Studios, and Dave Trot at BMP, advised Peter to develop his "book" to enter the premier league of ad agencies. How true. And that's my advice to young turks contemplating starting their own ad agencies. When I walked out of JWT, I had no leadership skills, no experience in running a business, no army of followers behind me, no one willing to partner me, no clients and no big bank account. Magicmakers was started virtually on my last month's pay-cheque from JWT. And all I had was Love for this business called advertising. Love means never having to say you're sorry? Well, I can tell you Love means searching for a roof over your head, painting the cubicle you call your office with your bare hands, going to MAKRO, buying the office machinery including a 200lb refrigerator and carrying it all on your bare back up four flights of stairs. Love means being prepared to take any abuse from "clients" who know everything about advertising, and are only interested to squeeze your testicles. Love means doing what is necessary no matter what it takes until you reach your goals. But of course, no amount of planning can replace dumb luck. From a one-man-show, I've watched Magicmakers grow to what it is today. The fruits of your labour will give you the greatest satisfaction and belief that love does conquer all. Never forget where you came from, and focus on where you're going. I came from the planet created by the Gods whom you can find at: http://www.adslogans.com/ww/prvwis19.html

Page 405
Millennium Managers Section
Malaysian Advertising Directory 2006 (MAD)

Peter V. Y. Lo
Ad Agency Owner
Magicmakers Sdn Bhd

Placing more value on his trophies attained in foosball than his British graphic design degree, Peter believed he was just the tonic advertising needed. He made his name as art director at JWT, including bringing down a state government, losing a new Land Cruiser in the Rejang river, among countless follies. Fired by self-belief that he could write, he took a 50% pay-cut to be a struggling trainee copywriter at Leo. Only dumb luck delivered him from Purgatory to the pearly gates of Bates, as senior copywriter. Through the years, Peter did win his share of creative awards, new business gains, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. However, his greatest achievement as an ad agency owner was steam-rolling past two recessions, of which he coyly underscores "I must have slept through them." Peter still art-directs and writes with an obsession to turn brands into the most intrusive and preferred, as he often puts it across gently to new client partners: “I’m not interested in BIG, I’m looking for winners. To make war, you must win.”

OTHER LINKS:

http://northumbria.ac.uk/browse/naa/friends/1980/?view=Standard

http://www.aaaa.org.my/members.htm

What industry people say about Peter Lo: visit SCAM - Verbal Assailant:-

http://www.network54.com/Forum/31827/thread/1069308684/last-1070338909/Anyone+of+u+know+who+is+Peter+Lo+from+Magicmakers-

To view Peter Lo's Creative Portfolio on Art Direction and Copywriting, go to:

http://petelocreativeportfolio.blogspot.com/

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://petervylo.blogspot.com/2006/06/peter-v-y-lo-in-mad-msian-advertising.html' title='PETER V.
